frequently asked questions

Actually, most of these questions haven’t been asked, but here they are anyway.

What is pleonasm.com?
It’s a weblog, with no particular theme. It serves as a creative outlet for me, primarily. I’m not here to amass a huge readership, nor am I a link whore; in fact, I never even look at my server statistics. I blog for me. Writing in public now and then keeps me feeling creative, and that feels good. In addition, this site is a place for me to experiment with things like CSS, PHP, JavaScript, and so on.
What’s your name?
My first name is Matt; you’ll just have to figure out my last name. I do like a little privacy.
Are you American? French? What?
English, actually. I lived in the US from 1993 to 2000, then lived in Paris, France for a little over a year, then moved back to the US (San Diego, California) at the beginning of 2002. I’m currently in Vancouver, Canada for a few months before returning to San Diego for a while, and thence to... well, I’ll keep you posted.
What tools do you use to create and edit your site?
See the colophon for information about this.
Do you use Blogger, Movable Type, TypePad, WordPress, or another blogging system?
No. I have thought about it several times; an automated, web-based publishing system would certainly make it easier for me to post from anywhere, which would probably result in my posting more often. However, I just can’t abandon my text editor and FTP client. I just prefer it that way. I’m not a Luddite; I just feel more comfortable editing by hand, and I like having total control over my code. Also, even though handcoding is definitely a lot more work, it keeps me on top of things by forcing me to understand the underlying code, rather than having a machine write it for me. I like to get under the hood and get my hands dirty; it’s just the way I am.
What does the little icon permanent link to this item at the end of each post mean?
It’s a “permalink” - a link to the permanent URL for that item. If you click on it and then bookmark the new page, you’ll always be able to go straight to that item.
Why is your site just plain text in one long column?
It only looks like that if your browser does not support CSS (a current web standard), or if you have disabled style sheets or overridden mine with your own. Otherwise, in a CSS-enabled graphical browser, this site will be displayed in a grid layout, with various font sizes and colours, and background colours and images.
What does “pleonasm” mean?
Take a look at a definition.
Is it true what they say about Englishmen?
Yes, but only in warm weather.
I think I love you! Can we go out on a date?
Like, as if!

Your browser does not support web standards, including Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). This site (and many others) will look better if you upgrade your browser. I recommend Mozilla - it's free, standards-compliant, and fast.
