pleonasm?

I needed a short(ish), slightly unusual domain name, but everything I tried was already taken. I looked around me; on my desk was a Linguistics textbook. Flipping through it randomly, I came across a list of linguistic terms, including the word in question.

Pleonasm is, according to Merriam-Webster, “the use of more words than those necessary to denote mere sense.” That’s pretty descriptive of my writing style, I guess.

The word comes from “Late Latin pleonasmus, from Greek pleonasmos, from pleonazein to be excessive, from pleiOn, pleOn more” (Merriam-Webster, my bolding and italicizing).

People often ask me what the word means, but fortunately people nearly always remember it without much trouble. I’ve even had a few offers to buy the domain name from me, including one just a few days after I registered it. But it’s mine, all mine, I tell you!
